Addressing behavioural safety might often be seen as a hallmark of advanced safety, health, and wellbeing cultures, perhaps only associated with large projects and organisations. However, the opportunity to lead by example and pro-actively engage everyone on construction sites is accessible to all.
Every change requires leadership, and this is especially true for a behavioural improvement program. Supervisors, managers, directors, principals, and clients can begin making a difference immediately by exemplifying the standards expected of everyone.
The impact of visible leadership is significant, especially when it comes from senior individuals. Ideally, this should start with the client themselves — what could be a more powerful message than a client who actively leads and engages in matters of safety, health, and wellbeing?
Clients can make a vital impact by being present on-site and engaging in conversations with managers about ongoing tasks and activities. Asking questions — especially about safety and what looks and feels right, or indeed wrong — can be an invaluable exercise, as our intuition often guides us correctly. If you feel comfortable, consider speaking with the supervisors and operatives performing these tasks as well.
Asking "why?" is an incredibly effective way to spark discussions and uncover opportunities for improvement - the "how". This collaborative approach, supported by client encouragement, can benefit everyone involved and is a great first step towards an improved safety culture.
